TYPO3 6.2 ELTS

TYPO3 6.2 LTS was available from 25.3.2015 to 18.4.2017. Since then, free support from the TYPO3 community has expired.

In its 6.2 version, the world's most successful enterprise content management system continues on its path towards even greater usability and quality.

Below we have compiled the most important functions of TYPO3 6.2 LTS for you.

Distribution Management

Previously, there were different installation packages for different areas of TYPO3 use, such as the Government Package especially for public institutions and authorities, the Introduction Package for TYPO3 beginners or the Development Package for developers.

With TYPO3 6.2 LTS, you now only need a basic package for the installation. Once the installation has been carried out, you now have the option of choosing a distribution for specific areas of use and downloading and installing it conveniently.

Distributions can be freely developed and compiled, and thus offer a complete package including sample content, TYPO3 extensions and TypoScript configurations. Possible areas of application could be, for example, special TYPO3 distributions for intranets, demo instances or entire industries.

If required, these distributions can even be published via the TYPO3 Extension Repository (TER) and made available to others.

File Abstraction Layer 2.0

The File Abstraction Layer introduced with TYPO3 6.0 is now included in TYPO3 6.2 LTS in version 2.0 and enables the processing of files, regardless of their storage location. All types of files can be managed and organized on the same server, as is usual with other CMSs. TYPO3 goes one step further here and with FAL 2.0 also enables decentralized management of files, e.g. in external ERP or CRM systems, cloud services such as Amazon S3, Dropbox, ownCloud or via WebDAV or network shares.

The Digital Asset Management (DAM) extension, which was previously popular in older TYPO3 versions, is no longer compatible with TYPO3 6.2 LTS. However, as part of a migration, existing media data can be migrated to the file abstraction layer anchored in the core. The filemetadata extension adds the META data fields known from DAM to TYPO3. Files that are no longer available in the FAL are now marked as missing in TYPO3.

The FAL Indexer enables the automatic processing and categorization of files in the different storage locations - also through the core categorization API. This allows new files to be automatically made available for TYPO3 and obsolete files to be removed.

Drag & drop for files in content elements

The important and long-awaited function for editors - the drag & drop upload for images and files directly into content elements - was also released with TYPO3 6.2 LTS.

The media extension sponsored by web-vision and available for TYPO3 6.2 offers a particularly convenient and high-performance option for managing large quantities of different files.

The new Install Tool

The TYPO3 Install Tool has been rewritten from scratch. Special attention was paid to improved user-friendliness and consistent stability during updates. TYPO3 6.2 LTS now also intercepts possible incompatibilities in third-party extensions during an update, attempts to fix them directly or enables the targeted deactivation of individual extensions from the Install Tool during the update process.

Default settings for configurations

The configurations that can be saved in the Install Tool enable different operating modes for TYPO3 and certain prerequisites depending on the mode. For example, a "productive mode" can be optimized for speed, while a "development mode" automatically deactivates the TYPO3 cache or uses other database settings.

1-Click TYPO3 Core Updater

The "Core Updater", which is also new, enables a 1-click upgrade of the TYPO3 core system for the first time in TYPO3 - provided that updates are available for the installed TYPO3 version.

Mobile Ready Websites with TYPO3

A major trend in recent years has been the increasing use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Nowadays, visitors to modern websites expect information and content to be available and presented in the best possible way across all device types.

Mobile preview directly in the backend

With TYPO3 6.2 LTS, the editor of a TYPO3 website now has the option of checking the display of his content on the desired device dimensions from desktop, tablet to smartphone directly from the backend. TYPO3 already offers extensive default settings for common screen sizes.

Additional screen sizes can be easily changed by adjusting the preview and saved for future checks.

Responsive image rendering

HTML5 has been integrated into TYPO3 for years and thus represents the basis for modern website programming.

However, a frequent requirement has been and still is to make images available optimized for mobile devices. Especially in view of the presumably smaller data bandwidth and, in some cases, smaller screen resolutions on smartphones, smaller images should preferably be made available to website visitors.

With TYPO3 6.2 LTS it is now natively possible to activate such responsive images (i.e. optimized for the screen resolution of the device) from TYPO3 with just one configuration option.

TYPO3 automatically calculates and optimizes the appropriate image for the desired screen resolution and delivers this to the website user when they visit the website.

If required, the various integration and configuration options for Responsive Images can be changed. TYPO3 is therefore ideally equipped for the upcoming standard for processing responsive images.
