TYPO3 v 4.7

TYPO3 is now available in version 4.7. Europe's most successful content management system continues on its path to even more usability in its latest version. As a TYPO3 agency and TYPO3 Gold Associate, web-vision was able to test the new TYPO3 version at an early stage and considers the new TYPO3 version to be a recommendable step into the future of dynamic website development.

In addition to the focus on HTML5 and optimizations in the accessibility of the system, TYPO3 4.7 has changed a lot more. Numerous innovations and improvements can be found in the areas of front-end functions, editor functions and developer functions.

We have compiled the most important new features for you below.

TYPO3 harmonized with HTML5

Wherever rich media content (images, audio or video) needs to be integrated on different platforms, HTML5 has established itself as the de facto standard for modern website programming. HTML5 conformity is therefore a TYPO3 4.7 core feature. What was previously only possible with third-party extensions or individual customizations is now easily possible. In cooperation with the system extension 'CSS Styled Content', TYPO3 4.7 now generates HTML5 source code that is W3C valid.

The improved and HTML5-optimized Rich Text Editor (RTE) can now be adapted much more easily to individual requirements. Furthermore, HTML5 video and audio files can now also be integrated, and it is also possible to upload several files simultaneously with TCEForms. For video content, TYPO3 4.7 uses the JavaScript library VideoJS and the Flowplayer as a fallback.

Extended access: The new 'Government Package'

TYPO3 4.7 is the first government package to be made available. It is specially designed to meet the needs of public authorities. Initially it will only be available in German, but an English version is already planned.

This project was funded by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE). In particular, the BLE supported the development of authority-specific solutions.

With this support, the BLE is underlining its strategy as an IT provider for numerous government institutions to increasingly integrate TYPO3 as a CMS.

Improvements in the rich text editor

As a central component of content editing, the rich text editor has been expanded with new functions.

In addition to numerous HTML5 attributes such as tags, articles and aside configurations, it is now also possible to create line breaks as a result of hyphenation. This opens up new creative possibilities for editors.

General improvements to TYPO3 4.7

An update of the external PHP libraries "Swift Mailer" and ADOdb has been integrated. This enables STARTTLS support and logging of sent mails via "Swift Mailer" as well as a new MSSQL driver for ADOdb.

The system extension "indexed search", the search integrated in TYPO3, has also been revised. A new frontend plugin has been created to replace the old one. It is based on fluid templates and completely dispenses with JavaScript in terms of templating and styling for page browsing.

In addition, some hooks for the indexed_search process have been integrated so that the search engine can be replaced.

The system extension replaces the standard search "indexed_search" by using MySQL full-text indexes. This increases performance and search accuracy.

A new backend language has also been integrated: Afrikaans. TYPO3 is now available in 51 languages.

The new backend user interface and the new functions for editors

Consistency is one of the pillars of TYPO3's success. And in order not to break with this, TYPO3 continues to rely on the tried and tested in version 4.7. It is the small details that make editors' daily work easier. The arrangement and position of the icons in the modules have been adapted to each other, as have the white spaces and separators between the elements to ensure a better view of the elements. The most important thing here was not to make conspicuous changes, but rather to achieve the feeling of working with a really good tool.

Thanks to HTML5, editors now also have the option of uploading several files at once.

For an easier life for developers and integrators

TYPO3 4.7 owes most of the requests for changes to developers and integrators. And although the development of TYPO3 could not only take them into account, there were some innovations that can be traced back to the requests just mentioned:

On large development environments, tasks are passed to scheduler tasks or CLI scripts to be processed asynchronously here. With TYPO3 4.7, these CLI tasks will output a correct code value that expresses the success of the operation and thus enables shell scripts to react properly.

When building complex domain models, TYPO3 developers often reach the limits of the IRRE and TCE forms. By expanding the TCA, it is now possible to build more complex relations, while placeholders (HTML5 attributes) have been integrated in the TCE forms, as well as new, customizable options in IRRE.

In addition, many new hooks have been integrated, which, for example, enable a completely customizable cache hash calculation. Furthermore, as with the release of TYPO3 4.6, the code base has been tidied up and superfluous methods, classes and files have been removed.
