TYPO3 for universities - Part 1

In today's digital era, universities are faced with the challenge of making their online presence effective and user-friendly.

In addition to the obvious target groups of prospective students and school leavers, the focus is also on companies interested in research and collaborations, interested children and young people, parents and alumni.

The university's website has established itself as the first point of contact for the various groups of people. Interested users can find out about the degree courses on offer, special subject areas and qualifications at the university and also about the university's social environment. In addition to the options for finding accommodation, online users also focus on leisure activities and direct access to the university's online services.

In the daily competition for new students, public and ecclesiastical institutions in particular have to find new ways. The university website has become THE touchpoint for attracting and retaining prospective students and ultimately converting them into students.

In this series of articles, we would like to take a look at the market of offers for universities that want to maintain their websites with TYPO3 as a content management system, the challenges that can arise, but also the opportunities that arise for interested universities.

Which systems do universities use for their websites?

As of June 2024, 54.22% of the 422 universities currently registered in Germany rely on TYPO3 alone as a content management system for their websites, followed by WordPress in second place with 9.88% and Drupal in third place with 5.78% (source:https://cmscensus.eu/germany/education-culture-sport/universities).

TYPO3 is therefore clearly the number one content management system for university websites.

TYPO3 is known at many universities as a powerful and flexible content management system (CMS) and offers optimal solutions especially for university websites.

With its open-source license and extensive community support, TYPO3 enables tailor-made websites that meet the individual needs of students and lecturers as well as the administrative requirements of universities.

Thanks to its high scalability and security, as well as special functions for universities, TYPO3 is particularly well suited for use in the education sector and supports universities in efficiently implementing their digital communication strategies. With functions such as excellent support for multilingualism, granular role and rights management and multi-site capability, TYPO3 also offers flexible options for hundreds of editors and content editors to present the university in an ideal and modern way on the web.

The Academic Committee - the representation of university interests in the TYPO3 Association

The TYPO3 Academic Committee consists of TYPO3 Association members from various universities and colleges that use TYPO3 as a content management system for their websites. Often the webmasters and administrators of the TYPO3 websites can be found here, as well as representatives from the areas of communication and university marketing.

The TYPO3 Academic Committee was founded in November 2016 to represent the special requirements and wishes of TYPO3 as a strong lobby group for universities. As a committee, it has been officially recognized and commissioned by the TYPO3 Association and thus also represents the link between the university community, the TYPO3 community and the TYPO3 Association Board.

Furthermore, the TYPO3 Academic Committee organizes the annual TYPO3 University Days, which offer interesting talks, knowledge exchange about the use of TYPO3 in the university context, but also the opportunity for networking. The annually changing location also offers committed universities the opportunity to position themselves as part of the TYPO3 community and host.

The TYPO3 University Days 2024 will take place on September 17 and 18, 2024 at the University of Leipzig.
