DeepL Translate for TYPO3: Development update April 2024

In March 2024, the DeepL Translate extension for TYPO3 received a significant update that enabled the mass translation and translation of metadata for assets. In December 2023, web-vision had already published a roadmap for the further development of DeepL Translate for TYPO3, which promised new features by the end of April 2024. Let's now take a look at the progress made so far and how the extension is progressing strategically.

Update 02.05.2024: DeepL Translate v4.3.1 for TYPO3 is now publicly available via the TYPO3 Extension Repository and packagist.org - also for TYPO3 version 12. Many thanks to all Early- Access-Partners who made this possible.

Automatically translate new content - Auto-Translation

As soon as a TYPO3 website has been translated into several languages, editors want new pages and content to be translated automatically. Previously, this required the responsible editor to initiate the translation process manually, check the translated content and finally release it for publication. With the introduction of the auto-translate function, this process is now considerably simplified.

In the TYPO3 instance, the auto-translate function can be activated or deactivated directly in the site configuration for the desired pages. This allows administrators to selectively enable the function for individual pages of a multisite instance. Further configuration options for activating or deactivating auto-translation can be found in the individually configured language settings in order to control the function for specific languages.

Once the auto-translate function has been configured, the alternative language versions are automatically created when new pages are created and the page properties are automatically translated by DeepL. If an editor creates a new content element on the page, the translation is also carried out automatically in all configured languages. The editorial work is then limited to checking and publishing the content.

Automatic comparison of content to be revised - Renew Translation

If several languages are managed on a TYPO3 website, editors often work in the default language or their native language. Even if the pages are occasionally translated into other languages, it can happen that updates in the translated content elements are overlooked.

The renew translation function of DeepL Translate for TYPO3 helps editors to keep original content and translations of content in sync.

The renew translation and auto-translate functions are closely linked and offer corresponding switches in the page configuration, the individual language settings and the page properties.

Once configured and activated, the renew translation ensures that linked translations of pages and content elements are updated with DeepL as soon as the original content element is changed and saved.

Availability of the auto-translation and renew-translation functions

By switching to package bundles with our partner packagist.com in March 2024, we were able to make the DeepL Translate add-ons available as Developer Previews for Composer installations on April 17, 2024. We invite our Early Access partners to update Composer accordingly or check the package list on packagist.com with their tokens. For Early Access partners without Composer installations, we offer to provide the packages separately.

Please note that the add-ons are currently still in the beta phase.

New DeepL Translate functions in the TYPO3 demo instance & screencast

If you would like to test the new functions DeepL Auto-Translation and DeepL Renew Translation for yourself without becoming an Early Access Partner or installing the extensions yourself, you can register free of charge for the DeepL Translate demo site and gain immediate access to the TYPO3 test instance.

In the test instance, individual DeepL pages have been equipped with user rights for the DeepL functions. For security reasons, however, the demo installation is excluded from indexing by search services such as Google and resets itself every hour on the hour.

A screencast of the new functions is also available on the web-vision channel on YouTube.

Outlook for further DeepL Translate development

At web-vision, we are currently focusing on the further modularization of the DeepL Translate extensions for TYPO3. As part of this process, the glossary functions previously integrated into DeepL Translate are being transferred to a separate add-on extension.

The aim of this modularization is to make the core functions of DeepL Translate available to all TYPO3 users in a public repository and in the TYPO3 Extension Repository (TER) under the name "DeepL Translate Core". The planned add-on "DeepL Translate Glossary" will also be published as a freely available extension.

An additional dashboard widget for TYPO3 will display the pages that still need to be checked and approved as part of mass translations. Another widge for the usage of the DeepL API will display current information about the translated characters, the maximum quota and the characters still available.

Following the release of the new "DeepL Translate Core", development of a version compatible with TYPO3 v13 will begin.

Early access partners of DeepL Translate will continue to benefit from exclusive access to all add-ons, developer preview versions, access to private GitHub repositories, priority support, logo placement and a backlink on the official website. You will also get access to the DeepL Translate version 5.0 announced for TYPO3 v13.

The following add-ons are currently available as part of the Early Access Program:

  • DeepL Translate Assets: Translation of file meta data with DeepL
  • DeepL Translate Auto-Renew: Automatic creation of pages and content elements in translations, renewal of translations when the original language changes
  • DeepL Translate Bulk: Bulk translation of pages and content based on the page tree
  • Enable Translated Content: Activation of all translated content elements with one click

These adjustments allow us to respond even more specifically to the needs of DeepL Translate users and to continuously improve the quality of our services.
